Phrasal Verbs and Expressions with TO GET

Short dialogue

Lisa got in touch with her friend Jane to tell her what had happened the day before

I got involved in a strange story, she said

I got acquainted with a man a while ago. His name is Steve.

I got to know him better after some weeks

Yesterday, though, I had the feeling I had got caught in a tricky affair

But it‘s getting late… Do you want me to go on with the story?

Oh, it doesn’t matter if it‘s getting late… I will get home later. Tell me, Lisa!

FOLLOW UP:

Yesterday, as we were getting down to work at the law firm for which we are both working,

I asked him nicely to get something done as soon as possible

Take a deep breath, Jane! It‘s getting a bit complicated!

He told me he felt he was getting ill and that he had to leave

Was it an excuse or was it true? I didn’t try to get an answer at once.

As I had just begged him to do it because it was getting urgent,

I felt he was beginning to sort of get on my nerves

I didn’t want to get into trouble with him, so I didn’t insist and got by doing it myself

As you can imagine, I got a bit upset and nervous because of his behaviour,

all the more since it was the first time I was getting along well with somebody after a painful divorce

And what if things are getting worse with him…

This relationship is getting a bit unclear to me

I hope thing will get better

I still hope to get the best of life, but I don’t like the way our relationship is going

I thought it was the right man for me and envisaged, why not, getting married to him one day

Maybe that’s true that he was getting ill and that he was not able to do the job. Who knows?

I’m still sceptical about that and I have to get a frank answer from him

unless things might get worse

I hope it’s just a misunderstanding and that we will get over this incident

because I was getting on so well with him until then

Do you think there is a chance that we become more understanding as we get older?
